Nikon D5300 Coupons.jpg">

Nikon just introduced the D5300 DSLR camera, which offers an enhanced 24.2-megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor, EXPEED 4 image processing, Vari-angle LCD, GPS and the convenience of built-in Wi-Fi. The mid-range SLR is compact and lightweight (16.9 oz.), and can easily be packed for a day trip or a planned getaway. The small body of the D5300 affords the photographer the freedom to travel while still being easy to handle and comfortable to use.

The D5300 is Nikon's first D-SLR to feature built-in Wi-Fi, allowing the user to share high quality photos instantly. The Nikon D5300 sends images to the user's smart device, allowing them to share their D-SLR quality photos through e-mail and social media. The Nikon D5300 also includes built-in GPS, another first for Nikon D-SLRs. Now the user can geotag images and allow others to see where life has taken them.

The enhanced 24.2-megapixel CMOS sensor delivers stunning images and HD videos with heightened clarity and detail due to the removal of the optical low pass filter (OLPF). Its 39-point high-density autofocus system with 9 cross-type sensors quickly locks onto your subject, and Nikon's unique 3D-tracking uses the 2,016-pixel RGB sensor to recognize and follow it across the frame.

Features:

  • Amazing Low Light Performance - For clean, sharp details even in the most challenging lighting conditions including night games and dimly lit restaurants, the Nikon D5300 covers a wide ISO range of 100-12,800 and is expandable to ISO 25,600.
  • EXPEED 4 Image Processing - Nikon's most recent image processing engine drives the rapid response and swift performance of the D5300, while maximizing energy efficiency, reducing image noise and delivering true-to-life colors.
  • Scene Recognition System - To further help users capture the image they intend, the Nikon D5300 features Nikon's Scene Recognition System and 2,016-pixel RGB metering system to analyze and recognize the scene. Utilizing these systems results in adjustments to exposure, AF and white balance to deliver the best photo possible, whether it's a landscape or portrait.
  • 39-Point AF System - Nikon's quick and precise 39-point AF system works with the Scene Recognition System to accurately acquire and track subjects throughout the frame, resulting in tack-sharp images. Kids too active to pose for a photo or pets chasing after a toy are easily captured in brilliant sharpness for memorable photos.
  • 5 Frames-Per-Second - While using the optical viewfinder or in Live View, capture great moments that would have otherwise been missed with the D5300′s 5 frames-per-second (fps) rate.
  • 3.2-inch Vari-Angle LCD monitor - Whether shooting above a crowd or getting low to capture the details of a flower, users can explore new shots from a dramatic point of view with the large 3.2-inch Vari-angle LCD monitor. This super sharp (1,037K-dot) screen allows photographers to easily make camera adjustments and read menus, while also allowing them to compose the photo they want clearly when shooting from high or low angles. The rotating LCD makes it easy to capture "selfies" at an arm's length away or frame creative perspectives when capturing still photos and HD video.
  • Full HD 1080p Video Capture - Create movies fit for the big screen with Full HD 1080p video capture at 60p with built-in stereo, wide ISO range for high quality videos in any light and improved full-time AF to keep the subject in focus.
  • NIKKOR Compatibility - The Nikon D5300 is compatible with Nikon's legendary NIKKOR lenses and powerful system accessories, further adding versatility and creativity.

Nikon 1 camera shows big improvement from J1 to J3

<Nikon D5300 Black Friday Dealp>When Nikon first introduced their Nikon 1 J1 camera a couple of years ago, their TV ad campaign with Ashton Kutcher getting fired out of a canon among other things, I thought two things.

First I liked seeing him get shot out of a canon and second, the Nikon 1 J1 looked like a really cool new kind of camera from Nikon. The commercial nicely shows some of the nice features of the J1 in a short 30-second bit, and it's one that I'm sure a lot of people remember.

With a 10.1-megapixel image sensor and five frames per second continuous shooting speed it handled continuous shooting easily. Full 1920 x 1080 HD video recording made creating great HD videos as simple as pushing a button.

I used a J1 while on holidays recently and found it to be easy to use, nicely sized to both carry in a backpack and in a pocket, and I got some great images as reminders of a fantastic holiday.

The New Nikon 1 J3 takes all the good bits from the original J1 and amps them up considerably, so it's a lot more camera for your buck. A little smaller and lighter than the J1, the improved feature set on the J3 makes this a camera well worth having a look at if you're in the market for a small format camera and want Nikon quality.

Where the J1 was 106mm W x 61mm H x 29.8mm D, and weighs 234 grams, the new J3 is 101mm W x 60.5 mm H x 28.8mm D and weighs just 201 grams. Both cameras use the 13.2mm CX sensor and have a 3" TFT-LCD monitor on the back for you to compose and look at your photos. The J1's monitor has a resolution of 460,000 dpi, while the J3 offers a lot better clarity with 921,000 dpi.

The J3, has a 14.2 megapixel sensor however, and it'll fire of a whopping 15 frames per second. It shoots the same 1920 x 1080 HD video and comes with the same five picture control settings: Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait and Landscape, and both offer user customizable settings.

The problem I had with the J1 was that my test version only came with the basic lens; the J3 came with a much nicer 10-100mm lens that offers a 10x zoom. I really like the size of the Nikon 1 J3, and it weighs enough that it has a nice comfortable feel when you're using it.

The 10-100mm lens offers lots of options for the user and adds enough bulk so it's very easy to get a nice stable platform to shoot photos from. I've got big hands, so the addition of the larger lens made using the J3 very comfortable for me as opposed to the J1 with the basic lens, which I found a little small.

The pop-up flash is totally out of the way until you need it, and the different modes of shooting are very user friendly and easy to understand.

The Nikon 1 J3 offers ISO settings from 160-1600, which enables users to have a tremendous amount of flexibility when shooting in al different sorts of lighting conditions.

My only complaint is that multifocal glasses are a pain when it comes to using point and shoot cameras. I end up looking at the monitor to compose a shot with the camera held out in front of my face and my head tilted back at an uncomfortable angle. In bright light I find myself unable to read the monitor so I've taken some shots that might make someone think I was loaded when I took them.

So, for me, it'd make the J3 a great little camera if a viewfinder were incorporated. It'd also be nice to have the ability to geotag photos. Geotagging is the process of applying geographical information to a photo, like longitude and latitude, so you know exactly where a photo was taken. After I go on a big trip I like to create a book of the pictures I took, and having my photos geotagged lets me add a map of where I went and what pictures I took when I was there.

I had a ton of fun with both the Nikon 1 J1 and J3, and I think the improvements made between the J1 and J3 make the new Nikon 1 J3 a great fit for someone looking for a point and shoot with tremendous versatility. I'd also add the optional Wi-Fi module to the package because of the flexibility that offers, and one thing that I'd like in a camera

PROS: Nikon 1 J3 is a big improvement on the J1; faster; lighter; smaller; a blinding 15 fps continuous shooting speed.

CONS: No viewfinder; No Wi-Fi connectivity without buying accessory; pricey at nearly $700 with taxes in; no touchscreen monitor; it'd be nice to have geotagging.

TO SUM IT UP: The Nikon 1 J3 is a vast improvement on the original J1, which was a very good camera when it was introduced. At $430 for the J1, users still get a great small-bodied camera with the flexibility of interchangeable lenses. For $630, the J3 offers smaller size, blazing speed, a 14.2-megapixel sensor and the same great selection of lenses.

Fall means roasted veggies and hearty comfort food

The days are getting shorter and the weather cooler, and there is nothing better than coming home after a long day to a warm, home-cooked meal. I'm a big fan of cooking pumpkin seeds directions dinner every night, but with a busy schedule, I haven't had a lot of time to shop or cook. Recently, I started cooking once a week, spending a couple hours to stock my fridge and freezer with dinners for the days ahead. The thought of having a freezer full of home-cooked meals makes my week look a lot less intimidating.

Fall flavors waft through the crisp autumn air. Pumpkin and apple are all the rage right now, but don't forget about the other crops that are at their peak, ready for the fall harvest. Take advantage of an afternoon to create hearty dishes for the week ahead.

From eggplants to onions and apples, roasting brings out a rustic richness. Roasted vegetables are easy to prepare and can be incorporated into an array of dishes. Try tossing into a salad, using as a pizza topping, or purée into a soup. Roast a combination of vegetables at a high heat, cut similar in size, drizzled with olive oil, salt, and pepper.

Squash is one of my favorite vegetables to roast. There are so many varieties to choose, from butternut and delicata to acorn and spaghetti. When roasting, there is no need to peel, just cut the squash in half and scoop out the seeds. The flesh will become tender.

Try roasting peeled carrots, parsnips, butternut squash, and sweet potatoes in one pan and deglaze with a splash of orange juice. Or roast cauliflower and Brussels sprouts together. Although many swear by bacon, or buffalo sauce, Brussels sprouts are delicious on their own. Try to find them still attached to their stocks. I like to roast the smaller variety, sweet and tender on the inside surrounded by crisped salty leaves. Slice in half and roast on high heat until browned. Roasted cauliflower is great on its own or tossed with pasta.

Mushrooms are a craveable fall food. I love their meaty and earthy qualities. Not too long ago I bought Shiitake mushrooms from North Tabor Farm that I sautéed with olive oil and fresh thyme. I couldn't help plucking the glistening mushrooms from the sizzling pan and popping them into my mouth. They were addictive.

Look in your backyard for edible mushrooms such as Hen of the Woods. Be sure to ask someone who can identify wild mushrooms since many varieties are poisonous. I like to serve cooked mushrooms with rice, tossed with pasta, or incorporated into an omelet or quiche.

I have a weakness for cheese. There is something about the ooey-gooeyness of melted cheese that is comforting to me. Macaroni and cheese is one of my favorite foods. I bake macaroni and cheese in muffin tins so that I have individual servings that can be easily defrosted for a quick meal at any time.

Try experimenting with grains and legumes. They are a great accompaniment to any meal and have various tastes and textures. Farro is a favorite of mine, with a nutty flavor and a firm texture that cooks just like pasta. I'm not a big fan of quinoa on its own, but I enjoy it mixed with rice. Cook red quinoa and brown rice separately and combine for a protein-packed side dish, great with sautéed mushrooms. Don't forget about lentils and beans. Dust off your bean pot and try your hand at baked beans the old-fashioned way.

I love this macaroni and cheese recipe because there is no need to measure the macaroni, butter, milk, or cheese, thus less mess to clean up. I encourage you to shred your own cheese instead of using pre-shredded.

Macaroni and Cheese

Ingredients:

1 lb. of macaroni, elbows, penne, cavatappi

1 stick of butter

1/2 cup flour

1 quart of milk, warmed

12 oz. sharp cheddar cheese (1 and 1/2 8 oz. blocks), shredded

Dash of fresh nutmeg, grated (optional)

1 cup bread crumbs, season with salt

1 tablespoon olive oil or melted butter

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cook pasta in salted water for designated time. Melt butter over medium heat, add flour and whisk for about three minutes. Slowly add warm milk, continuing to whisk until mixture comes to a simmer and thickens, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and add nutmeg and cheese. Stir until incorporated. Check for seasoning; add salt and pepper. Combine pasta with sauce and mix well.

In a small dish, melt butter or combine olive oil with bread crumbs. Spoon macaroni into muffin tins and top with breadcrumbs. Bake for 15 minutes or until cheese bubbles. Turn broiler on and cook until breadcrumbs are browned.

Noteworthy: Local produce at Whippoorwill

Whippoorwill Farm recently announced a sale in the form of a bag of fresh, local produce, at its farm stand on Old County Road in West Tisbury this Saturday, Oct. 19, at $25 per bag. Customers will receive at least 12 pounds of produce, with more than 12 varieties of vegetables including salad greens, lettuce, broccoli, kale, onions, peppers, carrots, potatoes, peppers, cabbage, and winter squash. Also available for purchase at the farm is locally raised, pastured chickens for $5.50/lb.

A Celebration of the Oysters

Since Katama Bay has re-opened and the oysters are available again after being shut down on September 9 because of a bacterium issue, Slow Food Martha's Vineyard is putting on a party at The Port Hunter on Tuesday, Oct. 22, in celebration. The dinner and a movie night begins at 6:30 pm with a showing of "Shell Shocked: Saving Oysters to Save Ourselves," a 40-minute film. Discussion follows, along with hors d'oeuvres and dinner. Admission is $40; $32 for Slow Food members. The Port Hunter is located on Main Street in Edgartown. For tickets, visit slowfoodmarthasvineyard.org.

Winter Warmers

<imperialimg src="http://blog.very.co.uk/wp-content/themes/very-v3/library/extensions/timthumb.php?src=/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Winter-warmers-main-image.jpg&w=684&h=448&zc=1&q=100">

Yes I know winter is slowly creeping up on us, but before you pull the duvet over your head and hibernate till March, here are some great reasons to embrace the season!

The clothes - Such an obvious one, but layering up is great fun and there are some heartbreakingly gorgeous knits out there right now. From cashmere cardigans to chunky jumpers, you'll be able to find one for every mood to see you through the cold weather in style. And don't forget all of the accessories on offer, from leather gloves to patterned earmuffs, you're simply spoilt for choice.

Christmas - Ok, I know it's a bit early, but as the nights get darker it's hard not to pick up on the excitement in the air. Before you know it there'll be secret Santa presents galore, Christmas nights out every week and hopefully a cheeky kiss under the mistletoe.

Food (and lots of it!) - Who can say no to a steaming bowl of delicious hot soup? Or a full Sunday roast? These things just don't taste the same when it's the middle of summer, but when it's cold outside they are just the thing to warm you up.

Boots - Nothing beats a comfy pair of boots, or even a snazzy pair of wellies for the wet wintry weather. Warm toes and you don't have to bother painting your nails. Who can complain about that!

Hot drinks - And what's more, the extras that go with them. Hot chocolate and marshmallows, mulled wine and minced pies, even a cheeky Baileys coffee. All are more than enough reason to embrace the cold.

An evening in cosy nightwear - Don't fancy hitting the town? When the weather gets colder you don't have to come up with an excuse for a night in front of the telly, you can just don your fleecy onesie and snuggle down completely guilt free.

The X Factor and other guilty pleasure TV - You know you shouldn't, but we love it! There's no need to stray outside when the shows are this addictive.

Hot bubble baths - The summer is all about a quick shower to cool down, but in the winter you can spend hours luxuriating in the tub.

Not shaving your legs - No more having to skip wearing your favourite dress or scramble around for a razor. Just grab a pair of 80 denier tights and you're good to go. Plus you can opt for some funky patterns and add plenty of personality to your look!

There are plenty of reasons to dress up - Halloween, bonfire, Christmas, New Year... Plenty of excuses to go all out with the fancy dress or get your glad rags on. And now you can purchase that gorgeous gown that you've had your eye on because you have plenty of reasons to wear it.

Now that you've shed your winter blues you can snuggle down, get comfy and embrace the weather! Enjoy! Love Aimee x

The Mars Curiosity Rover Has A Hole In Her Tire

<spokeimg src="http://static4.businessinsider.com/image/524d86ed69bedd0f0502bf59-800-/curiosity-11.jpg">NASA/JPL/MSSSThere is a hole in one of the wheel's on the Mars Curiosity rover.

Here's a closer look:

NASA/JPL/MSSS

The tear in Curiosity's left front wheel was first spotted by Emily Lakadawalla of the Planetary Society after new images from the six-wheeled robot, which touched down on Mars in August 2012, were beamed down on Tuesday, Oct. 2.

But don't be alarmed. Curiosity's handlers say the hole is not an issue. Dents, scratches, and punctures are expected as the wheels come into contact with various Mars rocks.

"Holes in the wheels are not a concern for the Curiosity mission," according to NASA. "Such wear and tear is expected, especially in the thinnest areas of the wheels between the treads."

Curiosity's wheels are constructed from tough aluminum, with some regions only .75 mm thick (.03 inches). The wheels were purposely designed to be thin and light to reduce weight and cost.

As Lakadawalla points out on her blog, Curiosity doesn't need perfectly round wheels to move around the planet's surface because she doesn't actually roll. It's more like she's shuffling along the ground, and for that all the wheels really need to do is "grip the ground," she explains.

The rover moves at an agonizingly slow pace - only 5 centimeters per second, or about .011 miles per hour.

So a few holes and scuffs on Curiosity's feet won't do much to further slow the mission down.

iPad 5 fingerprint sensor now very likely: Front panel fits iPhone 5S home button 'perfectly'

It's looking more and more likely that Apple's coming iPad 5 will will indeed have a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, just like the iPhone 5s iphone cases otterbox iphone 4.

Looking at all the unreleased iPad components he's been able to amass Unbox Therapy 's Lewis Hilsenteger had an idea. While it involved performing gadget surgery on his own iPhone 5S, it just may have been worth it.

Because, as you can see, the iPhone 5S' fingerprint sensor fits the home button opening on the iPad 5′s front panel perfectly:

As Hilsenteger himself says, of course, nothing is confirmed until Apple actually ships hardware. But this seems too perfect to be accidental. The old iPhone 5 home button doesn't fit the new iPad front panel, and the newest home button from the iPhone 5S fits exactly.

"It almost looks like it was designed to go in there," Hilsenteger says.

Adding Touch ID to a tablet will be something that business users will greatly appreciate. Apple has a new focus on enterprise this year, and the iPad is leading the charge there. Touch ID will be extremely helpful to businesses that want to keep corporate secrets secret, without forcing users to change their passcodes every couple of week.

"iPads are 88 percent of all tablet activations in enterprise," Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said in July.

Apple's iPad 5S will likely be launched this month in preparation for the Christmas shopping season. The device looks to be lighter and smaller than the existing iPad 4, while retaining the same large screen size. In addition, it will almost certainly have the iPhone 5S's outstanding new 64-bit A7 chip, with the new M7 graphics processor.
